A Surprise Proposal at the Chicago Botanic Garden
The Question He Planned for Months
October 2026
Some stories begin long before the question.
I have known him since he was a boy. Years ago, in a photography course, I met his father — two men with cameras, talking about light. None of us imagined that one day the son would call me with a secret: he was going to propose, and he wanted me there to keep it forever.
For months, we planned it quietly. The place: the Chicago Botanic Garden, where the paths slow you down and every turn feels like a page. The plan was simple — a walk, the gardens in full bloom, and one moment that would change everything.

She said yes before he finished the question.
What stays with me is not only the ring, or the tears, or the way the garden seemed to hold its breath around them. It is the thread underneath it all: a father I met through photography, a son I first knew as a boy — who returned years later with a secret — and now the beginning of their own family — photographed by the same hands, a generation later.

A father I met through photography, a son I first knew as a boy — and the beginning of their own family, photographed by the same hands, a generation later.
This is why I do what I do. Photographs are how a family remembers where it began.
To the two of you: thank you for trusting me with the secret — and with the story.
